Last Saturday afternoon, our hearts were truly full. The Neshanic Mill came alive as we welcomed over 60 friends, old and new, to Island Echoes: A 1970 Taiwanese Vinyl Listening Session. As the Senary Leaf Foundation’s first fully hosted cultural event here, it felt less like a public gathering and more like a warm family reunion.
Guided by the brilliant Dr. Yi-Jen Yu, we learned about the history of the Taiwanese music industry while listening to rare Taiwanese records from 1970. Yi-Jen shared some records from her grandmother’s collection along with some personal stories. Putting the needle to the groove brought back songs once heard in everyday kitchens and living rooms… tunes about love, hard work, and everyday life. This nostalgic experience was recently spotlighted by Daily Bao News, on how music serves as a timeless bridge to our cultural roots. Our ancestral land often lives beautifully among family narratives, half-remembered melodies, and the things you can’t quite Google. It was low-key listening that engendered high-key feelings!

What moved me most was seeing our community embrace our collective memory installation. Guests brought cherished memorabilia from the 1960s to the 1980s, each piece carrying deep personal meaning. Watching generations connect over these mementos, while savoring authentic Taiwanese snacks and refreshments, was a beautiful reflection of what we stand for.
At the Senary Leaf Foundation, we always say: Cultural wellness roots us. Cultural insight connects us. Our mission is to encourage cultural wellness as both a return to our roots and a continuously evolving way of life that honors connections across generations. Seeing that mission fulfilled with this unique community event was unforgettable.

A heartfelt thank you to Justine Hsieh for her meticulous organization, to our dedicated volunteers who gave so generously of their time, and to the friends who graciously agreed to be interviewed. You all helped create a deeply welcoming space for true cultural connection. Until we spin the next record, thank you for listening with us and sharing your stories.
